I have heard the presentation about Microsoft vs. Google by a staff from Microsoft in the 'Risk Management Class' at MBA course. He said business model of Microsoft which sells software has lots of risks of becomming smaller, because one of the competitors of them, Google is expands their business so rapidly.
I have just read the book 'Revolution of web' in Japanese author Mr. Umeda. This book was interesting. Regarding to this book, Microsoft is in this side of the web, called real world. It means they make software and sell to customers in the real world. And Google is in the other side which is not real world, virtual world on the web. It means they provide the search engine service on the wave called the ASP. They compete this side and the other side. For example, Yahoo and Rakuten is in the other side. The makers of PC and software are this side.
I asked him what is the next Microsoft strategy. He said it would be something in the other side on the web same as Google. I thought for both companies were going to compete in the other side since now.
The last years I have a grudge against Microsoft, because they seem to try and take over other fields other than OS's. I think MS has very buggy software too, and since it's not open source like Linux/BSD/Mac it doesn't have much future left.

Yes, as you say the trend of software is open resource, free or ASP, which is the opposit way of MS. I would like to watch the MS strategy.
