I have started to use the iPhone 3G since 17th of Jul this year. Actually, this is heavier and typing is slower than the other mobile phones in Japan due to only touch screen, and no key board available. However, I am getting use to touch screen recently and enjoying it now to use the mobile phone with new concept. I think it is not mobile phone anymore, but it’s an Internet machine, which is the kind of the first machine to support the idea of Ubiquitous, at anytime and anywhere.
I don’t regret switching with the same number called Number portability to Softbank mobile from NTT Docomo which I used for more than ten years and is the biggest mobile phone carrier in Japan. The iPhone 3G has quite a few functions, such as full browser Internet access by packet and wifi communications, e-mails covered with almost of the providers in Japan, YouTube, a camera and photo viewer, posting for face book, a map by GPS, bookmark sharing with your PC, and Podcast, etc. The concept of the iPhone is open source which means everyone can make software and service on the iPhone and sell them on it.
For instance, there is a program called iBeer, which seems like real beer on the iPhone’s screen and after pushing button on the screen, it is pouring into the iPhone with some bubbles, and you can pretend to drink it. If you shake the iPhone, by an acceleration sensor, the beer is shaking like a real beer. I found it on the YouTube video and I bought it which costs 350 yen in Japan. This is one of examples, but if you have a great idea and skill of making it, you might get a chance to sell to the many people in the world. The Open innovation is the trend on the Internet, but the most of Japanese mobile phone carriers are still closed for everyone to make something on it.
